Shrinking Our Carbon Footprint...
Bowlplex has a strong and genuine commitment to the environment, conducting business in an environmentally responsible manner.
We believe that corporate environmental performance is not just about being a responsible employer and stakeholder in the economy; it also makes sound business sense.
Environmental responsibility means first that our actions comply with the relevant environmental legislation. However, it also means that we strive to minimise our impact on the environment.
The work that we have completed to date has significantly reduced our carbon footprint and we are proud of our success. In 2008 we emitted 800 tonnes of CO2 less than we did in 2006 and this is a reduction of over 12%. Towards the end of 2008 we opened two new centres and even with growth within the business, we are predicting large reductions to our footprint for 2009. Whilst the number of Family Entertainment centres that we operate will have increased from 16 to 18, we expect that we will emit 1800 tonnes less of CO2 than we did in 2006, this equates to a staggering reduction of 28%.
We have been officially certified with the Carbon Trust Standard which verifies our assurance to real action on climate change by reducing our carbon footprint. The Carbon Trust Standard shows people which organisations you can trust to have genuinely acted on climate change and committed to ongoing emission reductions.
Examples of what we have done include:
- Reviewing building management control systems to improve efficiency.
- Investing in low energy lighting. We have spent almost £50K and changed almost all our lighting to low energy versions.
- Spent almost £100,000 fitting inverters on air handling motors.
- Energy usage figures and graphics are provided to all centres, raising awareness and improving efficiency at each site
- Recycling includes cardboard and glass with other materials under review.
We are constantly striving to reduce the power and resources we use. We are presently working on a number of projects that will further significantly reduce our environmental impact.
This will mean that almost 90% of our lighting will be low energy.
Overall whilst energy unit costs are projected to increase, the environmental footprint of Bowlplex centres will continue to shrink. Our unrelenting desire to follow our commitment to environmentally sustainable practices will enable Bowlplex to achieve continued success.
